Rules of Engagement
President Bush will announce coming plans for Iraq tomorrow night. As is evident in the header article, if the rules of engagement are not readdressed, adding tens of thousands of combat troops will be meaningless. You can't fight evil with the rules of compassion.
As much as I hate to admit it, I have to somewhat agree with Sen. Ted Kennedy's allusion for Iraq to Vietnam. When conduct of a war is delegated to commanders from armchair warriors in Washington (as was much of the Vietnam Conflict) with too much emphasis on political correctness, the boots on the ground might as well fight with their hands tied behind their backs. With the current rules of engagement and fear of our servicemen coming under the gavel for any slip of procedure, many more of our troops will be killed or wounded.
I will hold judgement on the President's plan until it has been overanalysed by the media. It sickens me to see chest beating Congressmen railing against the removal of Gen's Casey and Abizaid, siting these leader's criticism of the President's as yet to be seen plans as the reasoning for their replacement. These Generals have been in charge over there far too long with little progress toward victory; surely it is time to bring fresh blood with new plans to leadership.
